Sensei Kahn and Peter Papoutsis were
honored to be on the Dan Test Board as Bob Schoepke and Tony Monda were both awarded the
rank of Shodan (1st degree Black Belt) by their
instructor, Sensei Keith Marcott. Both students performed very well, and we are
pleased that they will be joining our workouts regularly.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of
Chicago Uechi-ryu Karate! Sensei Kahn would like to take this opportunity to thank each
and every student, past and present, and all their friends and family members that helped
make the last decade possible. We are all looking forward to the next 10 years, as we
enter the new millennium poised to carry on the traditions laid down by our teachers and
fellow Uechi-ryu practitioners.

August 2, 1999
Sensei Kahn once again taught several
seminars on Uechi-ryu Karate at George E. Mattson's Annual Martial Arts Festival. Joining
Sensei Kahn at the camp on Cape Cod, MA was B.J. Monson and Rich Skloot. Also in
attendance were Peter Papoutsis and Peter Nason from the Illinois Uechi-ryu Karate Dojo.
During the weekend, it was decided that the Illinois Uechi-ryu Dojo would merge with the
Chicago Uechi-ryu Dojo, thereby providing a much stronger Uechi-ryu presence in Illinois.
The Chicago Uechi-ryu Karate Dojo extends a warm welcome to its newest students, and
oldest friends, and Sensei Kahn is looking forward to providing a rewarding learning
experience for all.

June 26, 1999
Benjamin Monson was promoted to the rank
of Jun-Shodan, (Jr. Black Belt), the first student at Chicago Uechi-ryu Karate to
be so honored. Benjamin was put through an extensive and quite difficult examination for
his promotion and he performed superbly.

May 22, 1999
Benjamin Monson dominated the 13-14 year
olds division at the 5th Annual Uechi-ryu Karate Championships held in
conjunction with the New England Open National Karate Championships in Boston,
MA. Benjamin won 4th place in his kata division and 2nd place in his fighting division.
Michael Sydorowicz competed in the Adult Brown Belt kata division, turning in a dynamic
performance despite having spent the previous 48 hours setting up the enormous tournament
site.

March 27, 1999
Michael Sydorowicz traveled to Kalamazoo,
MI to take part in Sensei James Thompson's Midwest Regional Championship Karate
Tournament. Michael was outstanding, capturing 2nd place in his Adult Brown Belt
fighting division, and 3rd place in his kata division.
