We'd like to announce the newest
member of the Dojo: Troy Peter Nason was born at 1:04 am today, weighing in at 6
lbs., 8 oz. and 19 inches. Mommy is doing well, and Daddy is as proud as he can
be. Congratulations from us all at Chicago Uechi-ryu!

July 29-August 1, 2004
It's been another year, and Sensei George Mattson once again hosted his annual Martial Arts
Festival on Cape Cod, MA. This year Sensei Kahn attended the three-day
camp with Mitch Zaveduk and Kenji Higashi, who was attending his
first camp. Sensei Mattson's special guest for the weekend was
Karate Legend Joe Lewis who presented several exciting
seminars on fighting strategy and tactics. The Chicago Uechi-ryu students
also attended
several outstanding seminars led by Raffi Derderian, Rory
Miller and Tsukasa Higa among others. During Friday's
Dan (Black Belt) Test, Sensei Kahn was honored to sit on the Test Board. In all,
the weekend was full of intense training, old friends and new learning
opportunities.

BJ Monson graduated from high school and will be
attending college in Missouri this Fall. BJ began his training in Uechi-ryu ten
years ago, at the tender age of eight, and he will surely be missed in the Dojo.
Congratulations, BJ--and good luck!

Sensei George Mattson conducted a two-day seminar in conjunction with the Chicago Dan
(Black Belt) Test. In addition to focusing on the
ever important "Basics," Sensei Mattson
repeatedly stressed
the importance of performing movements in a fluid and relaxed
manner. All of our students again wish to
express their gratitude to Sensei Mattson for his time and effort.

The Chicago Dojo welcomed Sensei George Mattson, who
traveled to Chicago to conduct a Dan (Black
Belt) Test for three of Chicago Uechi-ryu's
students. After a rigorous exam,
Peter Nason was promoted to Sandan
(Third Degree Black Belt), while
Eugene Fliman and BJ Monson were promoted to Nidan
(2nd Degree Black Belt). The performance of all three
test candidates was excellent, and the entire Dojo is
proud of you all. Congratulations!

Chicago Uechi-ryu welcomed a
visit from an old friend this week. Airinhos Serradas was in town on a business
trip and stopped by for a
class. Airinhos, Mike Resnick and Sensei Kahn all trained together in Boston
under Richard Baptista. In fact, Airinhos and Sensei Kahn were training partners
while preparing for their Shodan test nearly twenty years ago. We were glad to
see Airinhos and hope he can visit again soon.
