Benjamin "BJ" Monson
Nidan

BJ Monson began his Uechi Karate training under Sensei Kahn in 1995 at the age of eight.  BJ was promoted to Jun Shodan (1st Degree Junior Black Belt) by Hanshi George E. Mattson in 2000. In 2002, at the age of 16, BJ was re-tested and promoted to his adult Shodan rank by Hanshi Mattson in Boston, Massachusetts. BJ was promoted to Nidan (2nd Degree) in 2004.

BJ has extensive experience as a tournament competitor in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Boston, Massachusetts, where he has numerous first place wins to his credit in both Kata (Forms) and Kumite (Fighting). BJ is also a long-time member of the operations staff of the New England Open National Karate Championships. In addition to his Uechi training, BJ is also skilled in the Filipino stick and knife fighting arts, and has recently begun cross-training in grappling.

BJ is currently a college student in Missouri, where he is an active participant in the school's ROTC program. He lives in Arlington Heights, Illinois with his parents and his brother Jake, who is also a Uechi student.
